Beyond the Jersey: The Bounce Back

Brianna Muffley's basketball journey started in third grade when her father signed her up for youth basketball and became her first coach. What began as a fun activity quickly grew into something much more, shaping her experiences on and off the court. She says, "My father always had a love for basketball when I was in 3rd grade, he signed me up for youth basketball and he was my first coach."

Brianna's time at Penn State Schuylkill has been marked by both academic and athletic excellence. She has consistently excelled in the classroom, making the Dean's List in Fall 2022, Spring 2023, and Fall 2023. She also earned the prestigious President Walker Award and was named to the USCAA All-Academic Team for both the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. Her dedication to balancing academics and athletics is a testament to her strong work ethic and determination.

Choosing Penn State Schuylkill was an easy decision for Brianna. She was drawn to the smaller, close-knit campus, where she could build meaningful relationships with professors, faculty, and peers. As she puts it, "Schuylkill is a smaller campus and the perfect place for my college career. Since Schuylkill is a more intimate campus, it is easier to get to know professors and faculty on a very personal level. Here people know me by name, not by a number." That personal connection has helped her thrive both on and off the court as she works toward her goal of becoming a registered nurse in a pediatric unit.

However, Brianna's basketball journey has not been without challenges. Concussions have been a major hurdle in her career. She suffered two in high school and another while at Penn State Schuylkill. After her second concussion in high school, she feared her playing days were over. She explains, "After my second concussion in high school, I thought my basketball career was over." But with each recovery, she found the courage to return to the game she loved. Her ability to overcome adversity and step back onto the court speaks volumes about her resilience and passion for basketball.

Balancing academics, athletics, and personal life is no easy feat, but Brianna has found a way to make it work. She says, "Balancing academics, athletics and life is extremely challenging. In my world academics come first during my college career. I am lucky to have a supportive family who understands when I can't attend events since I have to complete work or study. Athletics is my outlet for getting away from the books." Her academics come first, and she is grateful for a supportive family that understands when she has to prioritize studying over social events. Basketball serves as her escape, a way to take a break from the demands of coursework and enjoy the game that has been such a big part of her life.

Being a student-athlete has taught Brianna valuable life lessons, especially the importance of finding a balance between being a student and an athlete. It requires discipline, time management, and the ability to adapt to different challenges. She reflects, "I have learned that you must be a student and an athlete. Allowing yourself to give time to each part of student-athlete." Through it all, the Penn State Schuylkill Athletics family has been a source of unwavering support. Her teammates celebrate her successes, lift her up during tough times, and push her to be the best version of herself.

Brianna expresses her deepest gratitude to her teammates, who have become her best friends. Over the past two years, they have helped her grow in ways she never imagined, and she will always cherish the bond they share. She adds, "I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to my teammates. They have helped me grow so much over these past 2 years and I will forever be grateful for them. Over the last 2 years these girls have become my best friends and I do not know what I would do without a single one of them." She also appreciates the support from her coaches, trainers, and the athletic department staff, who have guided her through her journey at Penn State Schuylkill.

Her path to returning to basketball was not a straightforward one. She initially chose to run cross country to stay involved in athletics at PSU Schuylkill, but an early-season knee injury cut that short. Uncertain about playing basketball due to her past concussions, she reached out to Coach Killian about becoming the team manager. She recalls, "Choosing to run cross country was about getting involved at PSU Schuylkill. Unfortunately an early season knee injury stopped me from participating in cross country. Past concussions had me unsure of playing on the basketball team. Therefore I contacted Coach Killian about being the team manager. I was excited to once again be part of a sport that I love." However, due to team injuries, Coach Killian asked her if she would consider playing again. In the fall of 2023, she overcame her fears and rejoined the PSU Schuylkill Women's Basketball Team. Looking back, she says, "There is not one minute that I regret choosing to play again."

Brianna Muffley's journey is a testament to perseverance, resilience, and the love of the game. Beyond the jersey, she is a dedicated student, a future nurse, and a cherished member of the Penn State Schuylkill community.
