Darle Cresswell has been a steady and influential presence in Penn State Schuylkill Athletics for over two decades. As the head coach of the softball team, he is entering his 23rd season in 2025 and has also served as the Assistant Athletic Director for 18 years. His dedication to both his players and the campus community reflects his deep-rooted connection to the sport and the university.
Darle's love for softball started early. "It's a family thing," he says. "When I was a kid, my dad played Fast Pitch, so when I grew up I played." That early connection to the game inspired a lifelong passion and eventually a coaching career that has shaped countless student-athletes.
Throughout his years on the field, Darle has found the most meaningful achievements beyond wins and statistics. "Every year I get to witness student-athletes graduate, make lasting friendships, and compete on a daily basis," he says. Those moments, where players grow both as athletes and individuals, are what he values most.
Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Darle is focused on developing leadership within the team. "My goal is to develop leaders with versatility, awareness, and belief," he explains. He aims to build not just competitive athletes, but confident individuals who can carry those qualities into every part of life.
When it comes to choosing players, Darle looks for more than just talent. "Not all the time, but for the most part I look for players that have something to prove," he says. "Either in the classroom or on the field, they are internally motivated to put in the effort to accomplish their goals." That motivation, in his eyes, is the key to long-term success.
One of his favorite memories as a coach is from the end of the 2025 season. After their final game, the team didn't rush to leave. "They just hung out in the parking lot," Darle recalls. "They didn't want the experience to end. That year, they stood in the rain just being together." For him, those moments of connection are what truly define a team.
Outside of coaching, Darle keeps things lighthearted. A fun fact many players may not know is that he has two middle names. His players often see him as a leader and mentor, but it's these small personal details that help build strong, lasting relationships.
His advice for student-athletes is grounded in years of experience. "Compete daily, don't fear failure, and treat each day as a new opportunity." For Darle, every season is a chance to help his players grow into the best versions of themselves, both on the field and beyond it.
