Meet the Coach: Nick Marrongelle, Men’s Volleyball

Nick Marrongelle is entering his third year as the head coach of Penn State Schuylkill men's volleyball. With 18 years of experience coaching both men's and women's volleyball, he brings leadership, passion, and a drive to build something meaningful.

His coaching journey began after playing in college, which inspired him to return to his high school alma mater as a volunteer. Since then, he has earned several accolades including being named the 2016 Schuylkill League Girls' Coach of the Year and leading teams to three Schuylkill League Championships.

At Penn State Schuylkill, Marrongelle saw an opportunity to take his coaching to the next level. "The chance to continue to coach at a different level and build a program from the ground up" is what inspired him to take the role. His goals for the upcoming season include improving communication on the court, showing steady progress throughout the season, and earning the first win in program history.

Marrongelle looks for athletes who are passionate about volleyball, have a strong skill set, and are versatile enough to take on different roles. Most importantly, he values players with positive attitudes and strong character. "Continue to strive to be the best version of yourself that you can be as a player, but, more importantly, as a person" is the advice he offers to all athletes.

His favorite coaching memory so far came last season when the team won its first set against Bryn Athyn. "I will not soon forget the joy and exuberance from our guys. It was so neat to watch them celebrate such a historic achievement for both themselves and the school."

Nick has a unique sports background beyond volleyball. During college, he interned with the Baltimore Ravens, an experience that adds a fun layer to his coaching story.

Though he is new to the campus community, Nick has long had a connection to Penn State Schuylkill through his students from his years as a local high school English and communications teacher. He says the support from the campus community has made a huge difference in getting the program off the ground. "Everyone on campus has been so supportive. We couldn't accomplish what we do as a program without your help."

As he continues to build the team, Marrongelle is always looking for high school boys who have volleyball experience and want to be part of something growing. The foundation is in place, and the future looks bright.
