Softball Pushes Win Streak to Seven

LANGHORNE, Pa. – Penn State Schuylkill extended their winning streak to seven games following their doubleheader sweep against NCAA Division III opponent Cairn University.

Game One: Penn State Schuylkill 6, Cairn University 0

With the bases loaded for Schuylkill following three walks and a fielder's choice, Megan Marks (Lancaster, PA / Manheim Township High School) was hit by a pitch to give Schuylkill their first run of the contest at the top of the second inning.

Emma Crisswell (Williamstown, PA / Williams Valley High School) and Kaely Walshaw (Dornsife, PA / Line Mountain High School) hit consecutive singles for Schuylkill to start the top of the third inning and advanced to third and second base, respectively, following a wild pitch. Morgan Kleckner (Hamburg, PA / Hamburg Area High School) then drove in Schuylkill's second run of the contest. Three walks for Schuylkill in the top of the fourth ultimately resulted in two runs as Crisswell advanced to third base on a throwing error.

Kleckner singled through the left side to lead off for Schuylkill in the top of the fifth inning. Schuylkill's lead extended to 5-0 on the next play following a triple by Mackenzie Carl (Tower City, PA / Williams Valley High School). Tayla Jones (Pottsville, PA / Pottsville Area High School) then drove in Schuylkill's final run of the contest on the subsequent play.

Kleckner finished 2-3 at bat with an RBI. Carl tallied a triple and an RBI. Crisswell finished with two RBIs and a single. Crisswell dominated her matchup on the mound, going the distance and striking out seventeen hitters.

Game Two: Penn State Schuylkill 7, Cairn University 2

Schuylkill started off 4-4 during the top of the third as a double by Isabela Caruso (Gilbertsville, PA / Pope John Paul II High School) and singled by Crisswell, Jade Weiss (Pottsville, PA / Pottsville Area High School), and Cealinn McGroarty (New Boston, PA / Mahanoy Area High School) ultimately gave Schuylkill three runs for the inning. With Kleckner positioned at first base following a single up the middle, Jones would hit a home run to extend Schuylkill's lead to 5-0. Schuylkill would gain two extra runs during the inning following a single by McGroarty and an error. Cairn scored their first points of the contest at the bottom of the seventh after a double drove in two runs.

McGroarty and Kleckner finished 3-4 at bat while McGroarty tallied an RBI. Jones finished 2-4 with an RBI and a home run. Also finishing 2-4 with an RBI was Weiss. Walshaw secured the win in the pitching duel, striking out seven opponents.

Schuylkill (7-3 overall, 0-0 PSUAC) will enter conference play for their next matchup as they host Penn State Hazleton on Friday.
