Walshaw Records 100th Career Hit During Penn State Fayette Sweep

LEMONT FURNANCE, Pa.Kaely Walshaw hit her 100th career ball as Penn State Schuylkill swept PSUAC opponent Penn State Fayette.

Game One: Penn State Schuylkill 6, Penn State Fayette 2

Schuylkill had a strong start in the first matchup as Jade Weiss (Pottsville, PA / Pottsville Area High School) doubled on the opening play, followed by a home run from Kaely Walshaw (Dornsife, PA / Line Mountain High School), giving Schuylkill an early 2-0 lead. Schuylkill added their third run as Megan Marks (Lancaster, PA / Manheim Township High School) singled in Emma Crisswell (Williamstown, PA / Williams Valley High School) in the top of the third inning. An error in the next frame granted Schuylkill an additional run.

Schuylkill extended their lead to five unanswered runs in the top of the sixth inning as Walshaw drove in Weiss once again after a double. Alyssa Youst (Schuylkill Haven, PA / Blue Mountain High School) earned an RBI as she flied out to the infield, bringing Walshaw home. Fayette scored their first two runs of the contest with a single in the bottom of the seventh. However, Fayette's comeback efforts were halted as Crisswell struck out her thirteenth batter of the contest, resulting in three outs.

Walshaw's home run and double earned her three RBIs. Weiss went 3-5 at bat with a double. Crisswell pitched the entire game, securing the win.

Game Two: Penn State Schuylkill 14, Penn State Fayette 5

Schuylkill set the tone in the second matchup as Weiss tripled to start the game. Walshaw's single brought Weiss home. Schuylkill extended their lead to 4-0 as Youst doubled, bringing in runs for Walshaw and Morgan Kleckner (Hamburg, PA / Hamburg Area High School). Schuylkill hit three more times in the inning as Mackenzie Carl (Tower City, PA / Williams Valley High School), Tayla Jones (Pottsville, PA / Pottsville Area High School), and Marks hit consecutive singles. Schuylkill extended their lead to 5-0 in the next frame as Youst singled in Walshaw. Fayette tied the score in the bottom of the second with five runs, capitalizing on two errors and a single.

Jones singled and stole second base to kick off the top of the fifth. Jones' efforts were followed by a home run hit from Marks, giving Schuylkill a two-run lead. Singles by Cealinn McGroarty (New Boston, PA / Mahanoy Area High School) and Weiss, along with a walk by Walshaw, loaded the bases for Schuylkill later in the inning. McGroarty made it home on a fielder's choice that advanced Kleckner to first base.

With Brittany Kozlosky (Shenandoah, PA / Shenandoah Valley High School) pinch running for Crisswell in the top of the sixth inning, she stole third base and scored on a wild pitch. Schuylkill scored on four consecutive plays later in the inning as Weiss, Walshaw, and Youst all hit singles in the sequence.

Weiss, Youst, and Jones each hit the ball three times, with Weiss and Youst hitting a triple and a double, respectively. Marks went 2-3 with a home run, earning her two RBIs. Youst led the team with five RBIs in the victory. Crisswell pitched 4.0 innings and secured the win.

Schuylkill (19-11 overall, 11-7 PSUAC) will return to action on Monday as they travel to Gwynedd Mercy University.
