Softball Wins Season Series Against Bucks County

NEWTOWN, Pa. – Penn State Schuylkill Softball swept Bucks County Community College on Tuesday, winning the season series.  

Game One: Penn State Schuylkill 14, Bucks County Community College 3

Schuylkill got off to an early start in the initial contest as Jade Weiss (Pottsville, PA / Pottsville Area High School) walked and swiped second base. Weiss crossed home plate as Alyssa Youst (Schuylkill Haven, PA / Blue Mountain High School) reached first base on an error. Bucks County responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the first on a throw.

Kaely Walshaw's (Dornsife, PA / Line Mountain High School) single in the next frame brought in two runs for Schuylkill. Schuylkill heated up in the third inning with Youst's double followed by a single from Mackenzie Carl (Tower City, PA / Williams Valley High School). Cealinn McGroarty's (New Boston, PA / Mahanoy Area High School) single brought in a run for Youst. Megan Marks (Lancaster, PA / Manheim Township High School) and Tayla Jones (Pottsville, PA / Pottsville Area High School) added RBIs, extending Schuylkill's lead to 6-0 after three innings.

In the fourth inning, McGroarty's single scored Schuylkill's only run of the inning. Bucks County responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Consecutive singles by Youst and Carl set up Schuylkill's eighth run of the contest as Marks reached on an error.

Schuylkill's dominant seventh inning began with a single from Alivia Payne (Dover, PA / Northeastern High School). Isabela Caruso (Gilbertsville, PA / Pope John Paul II High School) pinch ran for Payne, and Weiss and Walshaw followed with walks, loading the bases. Morgan Kleckner (Hamburg, PA / Hamburg Area High School) cleared the bases with a double, giving her three RBIs. Kleckner scored as Youst flied out to the infield.

Carl, McGroarty, and Marks hit consecutive singles to load the bases again. Carl and McGroarty scored, giving Schuylkill a total of six runs in the inning.

McGroarty went 4-5 at bat with two RBIs. Carl finished 3-4 at the plate. Kleckner's double earned her three RBIs, and Marks also tallied three RBIs. Youst went 2-4 with a double and an RBI.

Walshaw pitched the entire game, securing the win while striking out nine batters.

Game Two: Penn State Schuylkill 20, Bucks County Community College 0

Schuylkill started strong in the second matchup, displaying dominance with seven hits in the opening inning. Doubles by Youst and Payne, along with a single by Miranda Hess (Milton, PA / Milton High School), earned Schuylkill two RBIs each. Another hit by Hess, this time a double and Brittany Kozlosky's (Shenandoah, PA / Shenandoah Valley High School) single added two more runs, totaling eight for Schuylkill in the inning.

Schuylkill added their ninth run in the next inning as Melanie Torrales (Allentown, PA / William Allen High School) singled to drive in a run for Carl, who had singled earlier.

With the bases loaded in the third inning, Youst's sacrifice extended Schuylkill's lead to 10-0. Carl's single brought in another run before their third out.

Torrales tripled to kick off the fourth inning, setting up Schuylkill's scoring opportunity. Torrales scored on a single by Kozlosky.

Schuylkill matched their run and hit total from the first inning in the fifth as Torrales and Hess earned two RBIs each in the frame. Kozlosky, McGroarty, Keira Devor (Lewisberry, PA / Red Land High School), and Youst also contributed RBIs in the final inning.

Hess went 3-5 at bat with two doubles and five RBIs. Torrales went 3-5 at bat with a triple and three RBIs. Youst finished with four RBIs and went 3-4 at bat with a double. Kozlosky went 3-4 at bat with three RBIs. Payne's double earned her two RBIs.

Crisswell pitched 4.0 innings for Schuylkill, securing the win while striking out six.

Schuylkill (22-12 overall, 11-7 PSUAC) will take on Penn State Beaver in the opening round of the PSUAC playoffs on Friday, April 26th.
