Softball Loses Second Round Matchup to Penn State Mont Alto

DUBOIS, Pa. – Penn State Schuylkill Softball fell to Penn State Mont Alto in the second round of the USCAA World Series.

After a two-hit inning in the top of the second for Schuylkill, Penn State Mont Alto countered in the bottom of the inning, recording four hits and five runs, highlighted by consecutive home runs.

In the top of the fourth, with Megan Marks (Lancaster, PA / Manheim Township High School) and Tayla Jones (Pottsville, PA / Pottsville Area High School) stationed at second and third bases, respectively, Cealinn McGroarty (New Boston, PA / Mahanoy Area High School) singled through the right side, bringing both players home. Jade Weiss (Pottsville, PA / Pottsville Area High School) and Kaely Walshaw (Dornsife, PA / Line Mountain High School) successfully battled at bat, earning walks and loading the bases for Schuylkill. A throwing error then advanced Walshaw to second and brought home McGroarty and Weiss, narrowing Schuylkill's deficit to 5-4. Mont Alto retaliated in the bottom of the inning, capitalizing on an error and a single to score three runs.

Mackenzie Carl's (Tower City, PA / Williams Valley High School) home run in the opening play of the top of the fifth inning brought Schuylkill within three. With Emma Crisswell (Williamstown, PA / Williams Valley High School) on first base, Jones singled through the left side, followed by Weiss, who singled to left field, bringing home Crisswell. Neither team managed to score for the remainder of the contest as Mont Alto secured the victory.

Carl delivered a home run while going 2-4 at bat. Jones batted 3-4, while Morgan Kleckner (Hamburg, PA / Hamburg Area High School) hit a double. McGroarty led the team with two RBIs.

Schuylkill will take on Carlow University in a win or go home game on Wednesday, May 15th at 10:00 AM.
