USCAA Softball National Tournament – Opening Game Recap

Penn State Schuylkill opened their USCAA National Tournament journey with an incredible effort against the #2 seed Florida National, ultimately falling 10-7 in extra innings. The Nittany Lions showcased resilience and power at the plate, holding multiple leads throughout the game before Florida National surged back in the final innings. Schuylkill's offensive lineup came out swinging, tallying 13 hits and driving in 7 runs against a strong Florida National pitching staff. Despite facing one of the top-seeded teams, Schuylkill's aggressive baserunning, clutch hitting, and relentless drive kept them ahead for the majority of the game. Even when Florida National mounted a comeback in the seventh inning, Schuylkill responded in the eighth with grit, taking back the lead before a late rally by Florida National ended the game in heartbreaking fashion. The Nittany Lions' performance underscored their place among the nation's best, setting the tone for a promising run in the tournament.

  • Emma Crisswell: Dominant performance at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a triple, an RBI, and scoring twice. She also pitched the entire 7.2 innings, battling through 142 pitches.

  • Mackenzie Carl: Led the offense with a stellar 3-for-5 performance, driving in 4 RBIs, including a clutch two-RBI single in the 6th to extend Schuylkill's lead.

  • Jade Weiss: Scored three times, swiped a base, and showcased aggressive baserunning to keep the pressure on Florida National's defense.

  • Keira Devor: Added to the offensive attack with a crucial RBI single in the 3rd inning to give Schuylkill its first lead.

  • Clutch Moments: Penn State Schuylkill jumped out to a 6-2 lead heading into the 7th inning, but Florida National stormed back with four runs to tie the game and force extra innings. Schuylkill responded with a go-ahead run in the 8th off an error, but a grand slam by Gianna Hall in the bottom half sealed the win for Florida National.
