Baseball Sweeps First Matchup Against Penn State Brandywine

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, Pa. - Penn State Schuylkill Baseball swept Penn State Brandywine in Saturday's doubleheader matchup, defeating Brandywine 4-3 in the first contest, and winning 12-2 in the second contest.

Game One: Penn State Schuylkill 4, Penn State Brandywine 3

A double to right field by Chase Herb (Hegins, PA / Tri-Valley) at the bottom of the 3rd inning began what would be a great inning for Schuylkill. Ethan Naftzinger (Hamburg, PA / Hamburg) followed the play up with a double of his own, leading to a Herb score. Schuylkill continued to roll as back-to-back singles by Owen Zimmerman (Hamburg, PA / Hamburg) and Owen Kosar (Shenandoah, PA / Shenandoah Valley), respectfully, lead to two additional Schuylkill runs. Schuylkill held a 3-0 lead going into the 4th inning.

Brandywine covered ground during the 5th inning as two singles, an error by Schuylkill, and a double ultimately led to three scores, tying the game at 3-3 going into the 6th inning.

With bases loaded for Schuylkill at the bottom of the 7th inning with the score even at 3-3, Herb connected on a single, leading to what would be the game winning run as Schuylkill went on to defeat Brandywine, 4-3.

Herb led Schuylkill with 3 hits (2 doubles) and an RBI. Naftzinger also tallied a double for Schuylkill to go with an RBI.

Game Two: Penn State Schuylkill 12, Penn State Brandywine 2

Following two Brandywine runs at the top of the 1st inning, Herb connected on a triple to center field, putting Schuylkill in position to score. A Jake Leininger (Pine Grove, PA / Pine Grove) single on the next play brought Schuylkill within a point. A single by Kosar led to two more Schuylkill scores. Schuylkill's final run of the 1st inning came from a throwing error by Brandywine. Schuylkill led 4-2 after one.

A Sac Fly by Kosar at the bottom of the third led to a Herb run. An error and two singles by Leininger and Naftzinger, respectively, gave Schuylkill three runs during the bottom of the 3rd inning. Herb connected on his second triple of the contest with bases loaded at the bottom of the 4th inning to extend Schuylkill's lead to 11-2. Schuylkill capped off their dominant performance with a single by Kyle Kaminski (Lodi, NJ / Saint Mary) at the bottom of the sixth which led to a Chris Duffy (Perkasie, PA / Lansdale) run.

Herb finished with 2 triples and 3 RBIs for Schuylkill. Kosar tallied 2 hits and 3 RBIs in the victory.

Schuylkill (12-6 overall, 7-3 PSUAC) will be matched up with Brandywine once again on Monday, as they travel to Brandywine to compete in a doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m.
