Softball Splits Doubleheader Matchup At Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic

Penn State Schuylkill Softball finished 1-1 in their second day at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic – Myrtle Beach, SC on Tuesday, defeating Trinity International 8-1 and falling to Centenary University 7-3.

Game One: Penn State Schuylkill 8, Trinity International 1 (7 innings)

With bases loaded for Schuylkill at the top of the 3rd inning following two consecutive singles by Cealinn McGroarthy (New Boston, PA / Mahanoy) and Mackenzie Carl (Tower City, PA / Williams Valley), respectively, Kaely Walshaw (Dornsife, PA / Line Mountain) perfected the trifecta and added another single for Schuylkill, leading to a Meghan Stokes (Winchester, VA / John Hadley) run.

The same result would occur at the top of the 5th inning, with Walshaw hitting another single with bases loaded, leading to a Stokes run to give Schuylkill a 3-0 advantage.

A Kristina McConnell (Port Jefferson Station, NY / Comsewogue) home run with bases loaded at the top of the 7th inning extended Schuylkill's lead to 7-0. A double by Caitlyn Goggin (Alexandria, VA / Hayfield Secondary School) with Morgan Kleckner (Hamburg, PA / Hamburg) at second base led to yet another Schuylkill run.

Trinity International scored off a double at the bottom of the 7th inning, however Schuylkill was in full control as they went on defeat Trinity International.

Walshaw led Schuylkill with 3 hits and 3 RBI's. McGroarthy, Carl, Goggin, and McConnell finished with 2 hits each while McConnell tallied 4 RBI's for Schuylkill.

Walshaw went the distance on the mound, winning her matchup and allowing only 1 run in the victory.

Game Two: Centenary University 7, Penn State Schuylkill 3 (7 innings)

Centenary started the contest off strong, hitting the ball four times and scoring twice to take an early 2-0 lead. Centenary would score once again at the top of the 2nd inning to extend their lead to 3-0.

A single by Meghan Stokes (Winchester, VA / John Hadley) at the bottom of the 2nd inning led to a Kristina McConnell (Port Jefferson Station, NY / Comsewogue) run to bring Schuylkill's deficit to 3-1.

A wild pitch thrown by Centenary at the bottom of the second would lead to an Isabela Caruso (Gilbertsville, PA / Pope John Paul II) run, bringing Schuylkill within one. An error at the bottom of the 3rd inning led to a run by Kaely Walshaw (Dornsife, PA / Line Mountain) to tie the game at 3-3.

2 errors at the top of the 7th inning ultimately led to three Centenary runs. Centenary's defense was able to stop Schuylkill at the bottom of the 7th inning as they went on win 7-3.

Stokes and Mackenzie Carl (Tower City, PA / Williams Valley), finished with two hits each, with Stokes tallying an RBI in the loss. Walshaw went the distance on the mound for Schuylkill.

Schuylkill will take on Bay Path on Thursday, March 9th at 9:00 a.m., followed by Hilbert at 1:00 p.m.
