Softball Dominates Albright College in Doubleheader

READING, PA - Kaely Walshaw (Dornsife, PA / Line Mountain) hit three home runs and tallied 10 RBIs as Penn State Schuylkill Softball swept NCAA Division III opponent Albright College in Tuesday's doubleheader matchup.

Game One: Penn State Schuylkill 9, Albright College 1

With first and second bases occupied by Schuylkill at the top of the 1st inning, Walshaw homered to left center to give Schuylkill a 3-0 lead early in the contest. Following the home run, Bases quickly became loaded for Schuylkill after a single by Alyssa Youst (Schuylkill Haven, PA / Blue Mountain) a double by Kristina McConnell (Port Jefferson Station, NY / Comsewogue), and a walk by Morgan Kleckner (Hamburg, PA / Hamburg).

With bases loaded, Emily Maher (Orwigsburg, PA / Blue Mountain) singled to left center, leading to a Youst run. An error by Albright plays later led to three more Schuylkill scores, giving Schuylkill a 7-0 lead at the end of the frame. A double to center field for Albright led to a run at the bottom of the 1st inning, there only run of the game.

It had been four innings without a score from either team when Walshaw homered in yet another run for Schuylkill at the top of the 6th inning. Schuylkill went on to close out Albright in six innings.

Walshaw led Schuylkill with 2 home runs, a double, and 5 RBIs. Walshaw also had a strong performance on the mound, going the distance and winning her matchup while only allowing 1 run. McConnell finished the contest with a double. Youst tallied 2 hits while Kleckner stole 2 bases in the win.

Game Two: Penn State Schuylkill 14, Albright College 0

Walshaw got things started for Schuylkill in the second contest, hitting a double to right center which led to two Schuylkill runs. A single by Youst on the very next play led to a Walshaw run, giving Schuylkill a 3-0 lead after the top of the 4th inning.

With Caitlyn Goggin (Alexandria, VA / Hayfield Secondary School) at second base, Cealinn McGroarty (New Boston, PA / Mahanoy) singled, leading to a Goggin run. The hot hand for the day (Walshaw) connected on yet another home run plays later, leading to two Schuylkill runs. Schuylkill held a 6-0 lead after the 5th inning.

Schuylkill had a dominant 7th inning, hitting the ball 7 times which ultimately lead to a total of 8 runs. Schuylkill went on to shut out Albright in game two, 14-0.

Walshaw finished with 2 doubles, a home run, and 5 RBIs. McGroarty finished with 3 hits and 3 RBIs while Youst added 2 hits and 2 RBIs. Walshaw went the distance on the mound, winning her matchup.

What's Next:

Schuylkill (8-4 overall, 2-0 PSUAC) will take on Cairn University in their home opener on Thursday, March 30th. The first pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. followed by a 5:30 matchup.
