Softball Splits With Penn State DuBois

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, Pa. – Penn State Schuylkill Softball split with PSUAC opponent Penn State DuBois on Sunday, defeating DuBois 6-5 in the first matchup, and falling to them 5-2 in the second contest.

Game One: Penn State Schuylkill 6, Penn State DuBois 5

A ground out by Penn State DuBois at the top of the 2nd inning gave them a 1-0 lead early in the contest. With bases loaded for Schuylkill at the bottom of the frame, Caitlyn Goggin (Alexandria, VA / Hayfield Secondary School) singled, leading to runs by Kristina McConnell (Port Jefferson Station, NY / Comsewogue) and Morgan Kleckner (Hamburg, PA / Hamburg). A single by Meghan Stokes (Winchester, VA / John Hadley) on the very next play led to a Melanie Torrales (Allentown, PA / William Allen) run, giving Schuylkill a 3-1 lead. Schuylkill's lead was extended to 4-1 on the next play due to an error. Schuylkill's final two runs of the contest came at the bottom of the frame as Kaely Walshaw (Dornsife, PA / Line Mountain) singled, giving Schuylkill a 6-1 lead after two.

An error by Schuylkill at the top of the 3rd gave DuBois two runs to bring them within three. A single at the top of the 5th inning cut their deficit to 6-4. With DuBois gaining momentum, DuBois connected on a home run at the top of the 6th to come within a point. The Schuylkill defense was able to close out DuBois at the top of the 7th inning and win the contest.

Walshaw and Goggin finished with a hit each and 2 RBIs. Stokes and Cealinn McGroarty (New Boston, PA / Mahanoy) tallied a hit and an RBI in the victory. Walshaw went the distance on the mound, winning her matchup.

Game Two: Penn State DuBois 5, Penn State Schuylkill 2

DuBois began game two on fire, totaling 4 runs and 4 hits during the first frame of the contest. A single at the top of the 4th inning extended their lead to 4-0. Schuylkill began to pick up ground at the bottom of the frame as a single and double by Goggin and Stokes, respectively, led to two runs for Schuylkill. Dubois went on to defeat Schuylkill as both teams failed to score during the next three innings.

Mackenzie Carl (Tower City, PA / Williams Valley) tallied 2 hits in the loss. Stokes finished with a double and an RBI while Goggin finished with a hit and an RBI for Schuylkill.

What's Next:

Schuylkill (10-6 overall, 3-1 PSUAC) will remain in conference play as they host Penn State Mont Alto in a doubleheader matchup on Monday, April 2nd. The first pitch will be thrown at 3 p.m.
