Softball Tops Keystone College

LA PLUME, Pa. - Penn State Schuylkill Softball swept NCAA Division III opponent Keystone College in Wednesday's doubleheader, defeating Keystone 9-3 in the first matchup, and winning 7-6 in the second matchup.

Game One: Penn State Schuylkill 9, Keystone College 3

Schuylkill began Wednesday's doubleheader with a single from Meghan Stokes (Winchester, VA / John Hadley). A double by Mackenzie Carl (Tower City, PA / Williams Valley) plays later gave Schuylkill their first run of the day. A Keystone error on the very next play gave Schuylkill a 2-0 advantage heading into the 2nd inning.

Schuylkill totaled five runs during the 2nd inning. Following a double by Carl which drove in two runs for Schuylkill, Kaely Walshaw (Dornsife, PA / Line Mountain) homered on the next play, giving Schuylkill their final three runs of the inning.

Keystone began to cover ground during the 5th inning as four consecutive singles gave them three runs and brought their deficit to 7-3 heading into the 6th inning.

Schuylkill connected on four hits during the 7th inning as singles by Kristina McConnell (Port Jefferson Station, NY / Comsewogue) and Caitlyn Goggin (Alexandria, VA / Hayfield Secondary School) gave Schuylkill their final two runs of the contest. Schuylkill went on to close out Keystone in seven.

Walshaw finished with 2 hits (1 home run) and 4 RBIs. Stokes, McGroarty, Carl, McConnell, and Whitehead all tallied 2 hits each in the victory.

Game Two: Penn State Schuylkill 7, Keystone College 6

A walk by Brittany Kozlosky (Shenandoah, PA / Shenandoah Valley) at the top of 2nd inning gave Schuylkill their first run of the second contest. Schuylkill opened the 3rd inning on a mission as a single by Isabella Caruso (Gilbertsville, PA / Pope John Paul II) drove in a McGroarty run. With Carl occupying second base, Carl doubled, giving Schuylkill their second run of the inning. McConnell kept the hot streak going for Schuylkill as a single to shortstop on the very next play gave Schuylkill their third consecutive run. Schuylkill's fourth run of the inning came plays later a ground ball. Keystone entered the scoring column during the bottom of the third on a Sac Fly.

Following a Keystone run during the 4th inning, Keystone continued to cover ground as a single to left center during the 5th inning brought their deficit to 5-3.

A Carl single at the top of the sixth extended Schuylkill's lead to 6-3. Keystone responded in the bottom of the frame as a ground ball and a single to right field led to two runs. Three hits by Schuylkill led to a run during the 7th inning. Keystone was able to respond at the bottom of the frame with a run before striking out plays later.

Caruso went 4-4 at bat for Schuylkill. Kozlosky tallied 3 RBIs in the victory.

Schuylkill (17-13 overall, 8-6 PSUAC) will take on PSUAC opponent Penn State Hazleton in their final road matchup of the regular season on Friday, April 21st. The first pitch is at 2:00 p.m. followed by a 4:00 p.m. matchup.
