Women's Basketball Holds Off Penn State Hazleton on Senior Day

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, PA - Sherly Valentin (Bronx, NY / Renaissance High School) was honored ahead of Saturday's Senior Day matchup against PSUAC opponent Penn State Hazleton. Schuylkill went on to defeat Hazleton by a score of 60-50.

The first period of Saturday's contest was evenly matched as Schuylkill held a 12-10 advantage heading into the second period. There was a total of 3 ties and 3 lead changes in the quarter. Tajae Stevenson (Patterson, NJ / International High School) scored 9 of Schuylkill's 12 first quarter points while going 3-3 from the field.

A 7-0 run by Hazleton out of a timeout gave them a 21-17 advantage with 3:13 to go in the second period. A 5-point stretch by Kassidy Ingram (Abington, PA / Trinity High School) gave Schuylkill a 22-21 lead with 32 seconds left in the half. A made layup with 10 seconds to go gave Hazleton a 23-22 advantage heading into the second half.

Stevenson scored on three consecutive Schuylkill possessions to give Schuylkill a 28-23 lead with 8:40 to go in the quarter. A made jump shot by Valentin on Schuylkill's next offensive possession capped off a 7-0 stretch by Schuylkill to open the period.

A 6-0 stretch by Hazleton brought them within one with 5:00 minutes to go in the third. Schuylkill then went on a 10-0 run to take an 11 point lead, their biggest lead of the game up to that point. Schuylkill outscored Hazleton 21-9 in the third period.

There was much back and forth in the final period as no team was able to get out on a huge run. Hazleton outscored Schuylkill 18-17 in the fourth period, while Schuylkill shot 53 percent from the field compared to Hazleton's 41 percent. Schuylkill held on to their lead as they went on to defeat Hazleton.

Stevenson led Schuylkill with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Ingram finished with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Serena Jones (New Ringgold, PA / Tamaqua High School) added 8 points off the bench.

Schuylkill (21-8. 16-2 PSUAC) will compete in their final regular season game at home this Tuesday against PSUAC opponent Penn State York. Tip off time is set for 6:00 p.m.
