Baseball Splits Conference Opener With Brandywine

MEDIA, Pa. – Penn State Schuylkill Baseball opened PSUAC conference play on the road against Penn State Brandywine, spliting the matchup 1-1.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 5, Penn State Schuylkill 1

A sac fly at the bottom of the third inning gave Brandywine their first run of the contest. Brandywine would extend their lead to 3-0 heading into the fourth after a single and a walk.

Following a single by Ethan Naftzinger (Hamburg, PA / Hamburg Area High School) at the top of the fourth, Owen Zimmerman (Shoemakersville, PA / Hamburg Area High School) hit a double to give Schuylkill their first run of the contest. Brandywine managed to score during the fifth and sixth innings while limiting Schuylkill offensively.

Zimmerman finished with a double and an RBI. Also hitting the ball for Schuylkill was Naftzinger and Jared Sterner.

Game Two: Penn State Schuylkill 10, Penn State Brandywine 4

Brandywine scored early in the second matchup as a sacrifice fly at the bottom of the first gave them a 1-0 advantage. A single and a double in the next inning added three more runs to their tally. Schuylkill got on the board at the top of the third when a triple by Nate Gilbert (Shoemakersville, PA / Hamburg Area High School) drove in their first run.

RayJay Marmolejos (Wyomissing, PA / Wilson High School) walked and stole second base to start the top of the fourth, then advanced to third after a single by Sterner. Marmolejos scored after a single to right field by Pedro Rosario (Reading, PA / Wyomissing Area High School).

Following walks by Brenan Adams (Pottsville, PA / Pottsville Area High School) and Kyle Kaminski (Lodi, NJ / Saint Mary High School) in the top of the fifth, Marmolejos singled to left field to load the bases for Schuylkill. Sterner walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch, tying the score at 4-4. Schuylkill took their first lead of the contest following a sacrifice fly by Connor Licklider (Hamburg, PA / Hamburg Area High School).

With the bases loaded for Schuylkill once again, Gilbert singled to right field to extend the lead to 6-4. Walks by Adams, Kaminski, and Marmolejos drove in an additional three runs for Schuylkill. A single by Sterner on the next play gave Schuylkill their eighth run of the inning.

Sterner, Gilbert, and Zimmerman all finished with two hits. Sterner and Adams added two RBIs while Adams hit a triple. Owen Shoop (Tower City, PA / Williams Valley High School) won his pitching matchup, pitching in 6.0 innings and striking out four opponents.

Schuylkill (10-7 overall, 1-1 PSUAC) will remain in conference play for their next matchup as they host Penn State Brandywine on Sunday, March 24th.
