Men's Basketball Downs Penn State York. Claims #2 seed in PSUAC playoffs

Penn State Schuylkill Men's Basketball clinched the #2 seed of the PSUAC East Division following their 90-83 win over Penn State York on Tuesday night.

A 6-0 run early in the first half forced a Schuylkill timeout a little over a minute into regulation. Out of their timeout, Schuylkill went on a 21-5 stretch to take a 21-11 lead with 13:24 remaining in the first half. 

Antwuan Byrd (Harrisburg, PA / Bishop McDevitt High School) scored 15 of his game high 24 points during Schuylkill's first quarter run. Byrd shot 5-8 from the field during that stretch. 

Schuylkill led by as many as 12 as back and forth action persisted throughout the first half. Schuylkill entered the second half with a 53-41 advantage. 

A made jump shot by Pau Pumarola (Barcelona, Spain / IMG Academy) with 18:46 to go in the second half extended Schuylkill's lead to 57-41, giving them their biggest lead of the game up to that point. 

York brought their deficit to 85-81 with 1:01 remaining in regulation. A made jump shot by Pumarola gave Schuylkill an 87-81 cushion with 46 remaining in regulation. 

After a made York jump shot, Andrew Sepp went 1 for 2 from the line to extend Schuylkill's lead to 88-83. Wilvens Fleurizard (Tamarac, FL / Coral Springs High School) knocked down two free throws in the final seconds to put the game out of reach and seal the deal for Schuylkill. 

Five different players scored in double figures for Schuylkill on Tuesday night. Byrd led Schuylkill with 24 points, 8 assists, and 6 rebounds. Pumarola added 16 points and 8 rebounds. Dashawn Dixon (Baltimore, MD / Cantonsville High School) finished with a double-double, 14 points and 12 rebounds. Fleurizard added a double-double of his own with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Ryan Worrell (Leesport, PA / Schuylkill Valley High School) contributed with 13 points off the bench.

#2 seeded Schuylkill (17-13. 16-3 PSUAC) will host #3 seed Penn State Wilkes-Barre (15-4 PSUAC) in the Quarterfinal round Sunday, February 26. Tip off is set for 3 p.m.
