Softball Dominates Penn State Scranton

THROOP, Pa. – Penn State Schuylkill Softball completed their first conference sweep of the season against Penn State Scranton on Sunday.

Schuylkill had a strong start to the first contest as Jade Weiss (Pottsville, PA / Pottsville Area High School) and Kaely Walshaw (Dornsife, PA / Line Mountain High School) doubled early in the opening inning, giving Schuylkill their first run of the game. A single by Alyssa Youst (Schuylkill Haven, PA / Blue Mountain High School) then drove in a run for Walshaw. Schuylkill added two more runs before the end of the inning following a single by Tayla Jones (Pottsville, PA / Pottsville Area High School). Jones also drove in another run for Schuylkill during the third inning to extend their lead to 5-0. Scranton scored their first two runs of the game in the bottom of the third inning.

Schuylkill's dominance was evident in the fourth inning, beginning with a home run by Cealinn McGroarty (New Boston, PA / Mahanoy Area High School) on the first play. Weiss singled and stole second base, setting up a run for herself as Emma Crisswell (Williamstown, PA / Williams Valley High School) singled her in. Singles by Youst, Morgan Kleckner (Hamburg, PA / Hamburg Area High School), Mackenzie Carl (Tower City, PA / Williams Valley High School), and McGroarty during the inning led to five additional runs.

Schuylkill continued to press on as Weiss hit their second home run of the inning, adding two more runs. Following a single by Crisswell, Reeya Chopda (Downingtown, PA / Downington East High School) came in as a pinch runner and scored after a double by Walshaw, giving Schuylkill their tenth run of the inning. Brittany Kozlosky (Shenandoah, PA / Shenandoah Valley High School) drove in Schuylkill's seventeenth run of the game during the top of the fifth. Weiss went a perfect 4-4 at bat with a home run, a double and two RBIs. Also hitting a home run was McGroarty who finished 2-3 with two RBIs. Jones led the team with three RBIs. Walshaw hit two doubles and drove in two runs. On the mound, Walshaw went the distance and won her matchup, allowing only two hits while striking out nine batters.

Schuylkill (10-4 overall, 3-1 PSUAC) will return to action on Tuesday as they host Notre Dame of Maryland.
